7 Wide Receivers to Sell High in Dynasty Leagues

It feels like just yesterday we were placing wagers on how many times Taylor Swift would be shown on TV during the Super Bowl. As the 2023 season draws to a close, many fantasy football managers take a break, recharging for the next season. Now, we have the 2024 NFL Draft to look forward to, as well as several other key offseason events.

If you’re reading this in late February, congratulations – you’re a dedicated fantasy football enthusiast. For many, this is the most exciting time of the year. Similar to NFL fans regaining hope through offseason acquisitions and the draft, dynasty fantasy football managers share the anticipation. Now is the opportune moment to leverage the strong finishes of players from the regular season and their performances in the NFL playoffs. The players on this list are here because it might be the best time to move them, given their inflated stock or impending decline. Please note, this list is in no particular order. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Tyreek Hill – Miami Dolphins

Coming off another stellar season, Hill secured his spot as the WR2 in PPR formats, marking the third time in the last four seasons. Commanding an impressive 171 targets and completing 119 receptions, he amassed 1,799 receiving yards and snagged 13 touchdowns. The question arises: why part ways with a player who seems as close to a sure thing as it gets? However, at 29, turning 30 this March, Hill’s age becomes a factor, especially in the context of fantasy football.

Furthermore, compounded by his statement to the media about retiring after his current contract, there’s a potential looming uncertainty. While he could alter his decision, the risk of being caught in an unexpected situation is worth considering. Exploring the possibility of trading into the top 6 in your upcoming dynasty football rookie drafts or targeting promising rookies from the 2023 class, perhaps bundling with a draft pick, could be a strategic move. In dynasty leagues, this presents an opportune moment to sell high on Hill’s high dynasty value.

Jayden Reed – Green Bay Packers

Jayden Reed has certainly impressed, recording an impressive eight games with 15 or more fantasy points during his rookie campaign. Notably, he secured four weeks within the top 12 in PPR points for wide receivers. Despite his evident talent, the dynamics in Green Bay, especially following Aaron Rodgers‘ departure, have led to an abundance of receiving talent.

Reed now finds himself in a competitive landscape, vying for targets not only with fellow wide receivers but also contending with two promising young tight ends on the roster. In light of these challenges, it might be strategic to explore acquiring a seasoned wide receiver who had a less-than-stellar year, potentially undervalued by their owner. This approach could provide a more immediate and stable contribution to your fantasy roster.

Deebo Samuel – San Francisco 49ers

Deebo Samuel stands out as a compelling asset in dynasty leagues, and when compiling my sell high list, he emerged as a noteworthy consideration. Undoubtedly a highly gifted player and one of the premier athletes in the sport, Samuel concluded the season as WR14, signifying a high-end WR2 performance. However, beyond his WR3 finish in 2021, he has yet to crack WR1 status in PPR.

Adding an element of intrigue, there’s speculation about a potential trade involving Brandon Aiyuk during the offseason. If one opts to hold Samuel until Aiyuk is moved,  you may be able to acquire more. While his stock seems unlikely to diminish in the interim, those aiming to secure picks should be looking to acquire picks in this upcoming draft. In the case of a pick-based deal, I would move him sooner rather than later.

DeVonta Smith – Philadelphia Eagles

Smith garnered significant attention during the 2023 offseason, following a commendable 2022 campaign where he secured the WR9 spot in PPR formats. The interest was understandable – a talented player in a formidable offense that had just made its way to the Super Bowl. However, this past season shed light on a team that may not have been as dominant as initially perceived.

Furthermore, Jalen Hurts experienced regression as an NFL quarterback, a foreseeable outcome following such an impressive campaign and an offensive coordinator change. The departure of Shane Steichen, in particular, seemed to have a more substantial impact than many had anticipated. Coupled with the presence of superstar WR AJ Brown, I would be looking to move on from Smith in a crowded offense.

Jaylen Waddle – Miami Dolphins

Jaylen Waddle is coming off a challenging season, marking his least productive since entering the league in 2021, finishing as WR34 in PPR formats. Characterized by frustrations, Waddle has been prone to injuries throughout his career, a trend that continued this season despite missing only three games. Notably, he often appears hobbled when on the field.

Despite these challenges, Waddle’s value remains high, attributed to his overall talent and the impactful system he operates within. While there’s comfort in retaining Waddle, the right offer or the need to climb in the rookie draft for a quarterback might warrant consideration for a strategic sell high approach.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba – Seattle Seahawks

Jaxon Smith-Njigba is an intriguing player, concluding the season as the WR45 in PPR formats. While his rookie season may not have stood out compared to some of his peers, DK Metcalf remains the primary focal point in the WR room from my perspective. Not to mention, veteran Tyler Lockett.

While expectations were high for Smith-Njigba, the reality is that there are still many enthusiasts who value him significantly. However, considering this remains a run-first offense, with Metcalf and a potent running back duo likely vulture red zone touchdowns, Smith-Njigba’s fantasy football production may face challenges despite his potential.

Chris Olave – New Orleans Saints

This is a difficult admission for me, but Chris Olave who I absolutely love lands on the list. Last year, he finished as the WR20 in PPR leagues. Impressively, he has secured back-to-back seasons with over 115 targets and 1,000 yards. However, the issue lies in his limited touchdown production, having accumulated only 9 receiving touchdowns in his first two years as a professional.

Despite receiving the volume indicative of a WR1, the scarcity of touchdowns may perpetually hinder his fantasy potential. Additionally, with Derek Carr recently restructuring his contract, all indications suggest that Olave is staying put. Unfortunately, as long as Carr remains the starting quarterback for the Saints, Olave’s ceiling may be a bit limited.
