Veteran running back Joe Mixon has officially signed a $27 million contract with the Houston Texans. Per Adam Schefter, this extension is for three years and includes $13 million guaranteed.

Joe Mixon Fantasy Football Outlook (2024)

After spending 7 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, Mixon has finally found a new home for the foreseeable future of his NFL career. Since being drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Mixon has accumulated 6,412 total rushing yards on a respectable 4.1 YPC. This includes four seasons of 1,000+ rushing yards and 62 total touchdowns. Now, his future will be in Houston with talented second-year quarterback, CJ Stroud.

This Houston Texans offense was extremely fun to watch last year as Stroud exploded onto the scene. He finished his rookie campaign 8th in the NFL in passing yards with 4,108. This is ideal for Mixon as he’s a very talented pass catcher and will certainly benefit from having another talented quarterback leading the offense he’s on since playing with Joe Burrow prior.

Dameon Pierce 14 7 145 10.4 416 2.9 29.7 2 22 0 0 0 17 13 101 0

Last year, the Texans running backs were a bit underwhelming, to say the least. Coming off a fantastic rookie campaign, Dameon Pierce took a backseat to veteran Devin Singletary. However, Singletary was recently signed by the New York Giants, making the role of the RB1 in Houston very clear for Mixon.

For fantasy football purposes, Mixon will likely be viewed as a low-end RB1 with plenty of upside. Mixon has finished as a top-12 PPR running back in three straight seasons. Notably, in every single season outside of his rookie campaign back in 2017 and in 2020 when he only played in 6 games due to a foot injury that sidelined him.

In 2024, assuming Stroud takes a step forward in his second year, look for this offense to be a dark horse as one of the most productive offenses in the NFL. There’s a low chance that the Texans could grab a rookie in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, the talent and depth at the RB position isn’t the greatest with this class. Overall, there is a clear path to success for Mixon for the next few seasons, with Pierce as a proven and serviceable backup/handcuff option.
